Geisha Momowaka’s Geisha sad story/陽暉楼/1983
This film is set in Tosa’s most famous ryotei restaurant, Yohkiro. It is a human drama involving Katsuzo, a pedant, Momowaka, a unfortunate Geiko*, and Tamako, Katsuzo’s mistress.
The Inaso-gumi, which is aiming to expand into Tosa, uses the geiko Maruko to seduce the gambling and womanizing owner of Yohkiro, and aims to take over Yohkiro for themselves.
The main character Fusako (Momowaka) has been in the world of geiko for 10 years since she entered the world of Geiko as a child. She becomes pregnant with a child by a young elite banker named Saganoi, but he tells her nothing and leaves to study in Europe.
Momowaka, despite her job as a Geiko, falls madly in love with a man of a different status. She has never been selfish, but for once she sticks to her will, and after conceiving and giving birth to a baby girl, she contracts lung disease and ends her short life.
*Geiko（芸妓）…A woman who entertains guests at banquets by dancing and playing musical instruments. Originally, a geiko’s job was to only sell her performance.
From Edo period to early Showa period, the geiko are same as indentured servants,like other prostitutes. They had to incur debt because their parent due to poverty and bad harvests, sell their daughter. But there is a different Geiko from other prostitutes in that Geiko is goverend by one man.
