Kiryuin Hanako’s life/1982/鬼龍院花子の生涯

Tosa’s chivalrous samurai, Masagoro Kiryuin(鬼龍院政五郎), welcomed his adopted daughter, Matsue(松恵), in 1921.
Matsue grows up taking care of Masagoro’s personal needs.

Masagoro kidnaps servant Woman, Tsuru(つる), from a ryotei restaurant run by the wife of Suenaga(末長), a man with whom Masagoro has a rivalry, to makes Masagoro’s concubine because of an altercation over a dogfight.

The following year, Tsuru gives birth to Masagoro’s daughter, Hanako(花子).


Adopted daughter and beloved daughter.
The story is set in a real-life ninkyo family in Kutanda(九反田), Tosa Kochi(土佐高知), which makes us think about what the parent-child relationship is, regardless of whether they are related by blood or not.
